At the very beginning of the church, those people who were against non-Christians said: Christians get together to eat the flesh of a dead man. Although, they spoke out of ignorance, it showed that even people who did not believe understood Jesus’ message of “unless you eat my flesh…”
We are asked to believe that Jesus becomes a tiny host. I do not doubt that most of us believe that Jesus becomes bread and wine. After all, Jesus is God and he can do and become whatever he wants. Yet, I also know that for some of us receiving communion has not changed us. Are we not changing because of God or because of our attitudes? I think we are not letting God change us. After receiving communion we go back to do the same old way. I have seen brothers and sisters avoiding shaking hands at the time of peace. They even speak ill about each other inside the church. Our instincts and our anger seem to interfere with Jesus’ grace. We rationalize and create lots of excuses to defend our point of view (after all, our sister did take our inheritance or a husband cheated on his wife). We choose to ignore Jesus’ request to forgive, but deep down inside of us, we know that we can do better.
When we understand the sacredness of Jesus’ body we change without much effort, but we have to understand it. We have to believe!
One day we will make a decision to change, even if we do not feel inspired by God. We may do it out of being tired of living without Grace. Many people complain that God does not answer their prayers, but if you have time to sit down with them and analyze their situation, you will soon realize that they are full of resentment, anger, jealousy and hate. They may also be insecure and too sensitive. Furthermore, they do not pray as much as they claim and when they do, they rush their prayers. It does not take long to see that their prayer life is poor and so is what they are asking for. Nevertheless, they have faith, but they do not seem to be able to put that faith into action.
It works like this: “Ok, I am angry with X, I am going to forgive him. I will repeat it day and night until the anger leaves me. I will also pray for X and ask blessings for him. I will end my prayer by asking God for the gift of forgiveness and unconditional love (like God)”. This prayer works like magic, miracles happen, and pretty soon your own anger will dissipate and Grace will enter your house.
The decision of changing comes from watching God’s work in the world. Take a moment to look around: see God’s creation. Read the bible and find in it ways in which you can improve your life. Ask yourself what makes you stumble over and over again. What is anger and resentment giving you? Is it freeing or enslaving you?
There needs to be a leap of faith. You have to make that leap. You have to choose to live life AS IF Jesus was at your side at all times, so that your actions may reflect his presence.
The celebration of Corpus Christi is a reminder of the importance of Jesus physical presence in the world AT ALL TIMES. Let’s take advantage of this, and seek to spend some time with Jesus alone, whether in your house or at church. Pray for an increase of faith and start practicing what Jesus asked, even if it is hard, and especially when it is hard (it means you need it even more). May you and your family be blessed in the feast of Corpus Christi.
On July 1, 2017 I will be celebrating 29 years of being ordained a priest. IT has been a long and hard journey, but I would not change any of it. I am appreciative of God’s work through me, even in difficult times. I will be saying a Thanksgiving mass on July 2, at 6:00 pm, come join me, and if you cannot attend please say a special prayer for me. Thanks
